Doctor Robert, Colorado Beatles Tribute

Doctor Robert performed for the second time this winter at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, to a packed house at Butte 66. Every show seems to get better for us at this base area venue, and we want to thank all the locals and visitors for making it such a great day of Beatles music. This may have broken the record for number of dancers in ski/snowboard boots, as the enthusiasm was quite high last Saturday. Doctor Robert, The Colorado Beatles Tribute just finished our first four-night run in our 2 1/2 year history. This amazing string of shows also brought us out of Colorado for the first time, playing three shows in Taos, New Mexico. We performed around ten hours of music, 94 different songs, with a total of 190 songs in the four nights. Our first show on Friday, March 8th was at Wildwood Sounds for our third visit to this great Del Norte venue. Thanks to all of our good friends and fans in The Valley that braved the snow to come out for some fun Beatles music. We love to play Wildwood and will hopefully return sometime this summer/fall. Saturday, March 9th brought us to our first out-of-state show at Alley Cantina in downtown Taos. Despite the epic snow storm that was slamming New Mexico, we had a good crowd and enjoyed playing this unique venue. Sunday, March 10th was an all ages show at KTAOS Solar Center, and we loved playing this great local radio station/music venue. Thanks to everyone that came out and brought their families for a fun night, even after skiing two days straight with 26 inches of fresh powder over the weekend. Doctor Robert even made it a point to get to the ski area to ski the pow, and we felt incredibly lucky with the timing of our trip to Taos. KJ Ben HikeOur final show was Monday, March 11th at The Martini Tree bar at Taos Ski Valley for an apres ski show. Colorado Beatles Tribute

Thanks to the Crested Butte Ski Patrol for having Doctor Robert perform three sets of Beatles tribute at their annual Attitude Adjustment Fundraiser last Friday night. It was a great turnout, and it’s always fun to play a great hometown show in Crested Butte. Thanks to our regulars that came out, as well as all the new fans that just saw Doctor Robert for the first time. Here are some recordings from the night, with a lot of songs appearing that aren’t in our regular rotation:

Things We Said Today
I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party
Strawberry Fields Forever –> Hey Bulldog Always a fun jam/segway.
Old Brown Shoe

Revolution
Paperback Writer A rare extended jam to finish the song.
Come Together

Paonia Blue Sage Center for the Arts

Doctor Robert would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone in Paonia for making our Beatles Tribute night such a wonderful experience. This may be the most enthusiastic dancing crowd we’ve seen yet, with the local swing dancing group in attendance. Everyone in the room seemed to know how to dance, with or without a partner. This was our second stop at Blue Sage Center for the Arts, and we’ve now had two great nights in Paonia, Colorado. This time we even had a nice dinner with a few friendly locals before the show. The good people at the Blue Sage also gave us an amazing apartment upstairs for the night that was over 100 years old. We look forward to our next visit to Paonia, thanks again to everyone that came out and danced their hearts out for three hours!

Here are a few recordings from the night:

Durango Summit, Ska Brewing, Dolores River Brewery

On our way home from our Durango and Dolores shows this past weekend, we found ourselves asking “Did that all really just happen?” Wow, what an amazing three shows in southwest Colorado, starting in Durango at The Summit on January 30th and Ska Brewing on January 31st, then heading to Dolores River Brewery (DRB) on February 2nd. We can’t remember three shows in a row with such welcoming fans, the enthusiasm for Doctor Robert was through the roof at all three shows. Thanks so much to all the great people that made the weekend such a great success, especially Eugene and Scottie from The Summit, Holly from Ska, and Mark from DRB. So much good energy was captured in our recordings from each night, so we’ll start with some from 1/30 at The Summit:

Get Back Second set opener, jamming to “Blondie” as we started “Get Back.”
Paperback Writer — Taxman A rare extended jam of “Paperback Writer,” which blended nicely into “Taxman.”
I’ve Just Seen a Face Possibly the peak of crowd enthusiasm, people LOVE to sing along with this one.
I Want You — Back in the USSR
It Won’t Be Long
All My Loving
Come Together Our longest song to date, almost 16 minutes with some fun twists and turns.
With a Little Help From My Friends Always a fun one at the end of the night.
Got To Get You Into My Life
Helter Skelter — Day Tripper

The following evening, we played 140 minutes straight at Ska Brewing. This show was all ages, and brought out some huge Beatles fans anywhere from two years old to 83 years old. Elvis even made an appearance. Here are a handful of tracks from Ska:

Yellow Submarine This was requested by the three youngest fans in the room. At the end of the song, Karen invited them up to help finish out the chorus a bunch of times.
You Can’t Do That
One After 909 One of the “deep tracks” that is really fun to play every time.
Norwegian Wood
Let it Be This was requested several times, Karen does a great job with this one.
Get Back
Come Together
Back in the USSR — Dear Prudence The first notes of “Dear Prudence” always get a great reaction.

We finished out the weekend at Dolores River Brewery, with possibly the most enthusiastic crowd we’ve ever played for. The bar was packed from the beginning, and everyone danced and sang along the entire night. We look forward to returning to DRB this summer and playing the outside stage. Here’s a bunch of tracks:

Taxman — Drive My Car
Two of Us
Wild Honey Pie — Why Don’t We Do It In The Road We love the random “deep tracks,” fortunately so do Beatles fans.
Revolution — Get Back Love the help with the scream in the beginning of “Revolution.”
What Goes On
Strawberry Fields Forever — I Am The Walrus Fun transition between two psychedelic tracks.
Please Please Me It was great to see the fans in back on their chairs dancing and singing to this early classic.
Ob La Di Ob La Da One of the most popular songs we play, it usually brings everyone out to dance.
Wait A rare appearance of this “Rubber Soul” cut.
Tell Me Why
Rain Someone requested a psychedelic song, and this was our answer.
Mean Mr. Mustard — Polythene Pam — She Came in Through the Bathroom Window Each song in this “Abbey Road” trilogy built up momentum.
Lady Madonna
If I Needed Someone — Run For Your Life
I Want to Hold Your Hand More great crowd participation on this version.
I Saw Her Standing There Great “alternative rock” intro after Casey forgot to tune up after “Dear Prudence.”
I Feel Fine
Doctor Robert This one often gets no reaction, but many people knew this one in Dolores.
Can’t Buy Me Love
A Hard Day’s Night — Eight Days a Week These two are always crowd favorites.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps Second set closer, always a good blowout for Doctor Robert and the crowd.
Yellow Submarine First encore. After the crowd started singing it for us, how could we not play it. This was the weekend of “Yellow Submarine,” we’ve never had so much fun playing this one.
Hey Jude Second encore, great sing-a-long.
A Day in the Life Our third encore.
Yesterday First time played! The original recording used a guitar tuned down a full step. Our guitar has regular tuning, which makes singing this song pretty hard at the end of the night.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make such a memorable weekend for Doctor Robert, The Beatles Tribute from Crested Butte, Colorado. We look forward to getting back to all three venues this summer.

three20south and Tugboat

Doctor Robert performed its Colorado style Beatles tribute last weekend at three20south in Breckenridge and The Tugboat in Steamboat Springs. This was our first visit to each of these towns, and we loved playing both of these classic mountain town music venues. Both nights brought out a very enthusiastic crowd, full of Beatles fanatics of all generations. We appreciate everyone singing and dancing all night both nights, and can’t wait to return to both three20south and Tugboat.

We recorded some audio from both nights as usual, so here’s a handful of songs from three20south in Breckenridge. This was recorded on stage in front of Kevin’s monitor, so his vocals are a touch loud, but you get the idea:
You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Taxman
Love Me Do
I’m Looking Through You
Hey Jude

And here’s a few from Tugboat, recorded above the soundboard in the audience:
Please Please Me
Strawberry Fields Forever — With a Little Help From My Friends
One After 909
I’m So Tired — I’ve Got a Feeling
I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party
Come Together — Money
All Together Now

This show brought out several rare songs, both for Doctor Robert and The Beatles, such as “Old Brown Shoe,” “Piggies,” “Think for Yourself,” “The Word,” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” just to name a few. Here are some recordings from the afternoon:

You Can’t Do That
Think For Yourself — The Word

Two Years of Doctor Robert

Our first official gig, DoctoberFest on 10/16/10 at Rainbow Park in Crested Butte.

Our first official gig, DoctoberFest on 10/16/10 in Rainbow Park in Crested Butte.

October marked the official two-year anniversary of Doctor Robert as a full band, and 101 songs into the project, we’re all as enthused as we were at the beginning (if not more)! The music of the Beatles is so diverse, so complex, and so inspiring we can’t wait to get into more.

The Doctor Robert Beatles tribute band has truly been an amazing experience. We can honestly say there hasn’t been a gig where people didn’t approach us to say how much they enjoyed the show. We’ve met some great people, learned a ton, and seen a lot. There have been conga lines, circle dancing, two stepping, breakdance moves, raised-arm tunnels, some crazy costumes, and even a somersault and a worm on the dance floor. There have been people in wheelchairs and walkers, toddlers wearing nothing but diapers, newlyweds, birthday celebrants, and basically just folks of every age, size and background dancing and purely enjoying this music. Doctor Robert has been hired to play fundraisers for causes as varied as a children’s museum to a college wrestling team. We’ve played venues from dive bars to the Museum of Natural History and Science in Denver. We’ve performed for amazing couples for their weddings throughout Colorado. We’ve survived colds, laryngitis, allergies, a trailer tire blowout, a family tragedy, some pretty interesting sleeping arrangements, a chopped-off fingertip, salmonella, and more to still play shows that elicit nothing but compliments. We’ve all tried our hand at instruments we’d never really played, harmonies we weren’t sure we could master…learning all the while!

We are extremely grateful to everyone who has come out to support the Doctor Robert project, and we look forward to more good times to come. Since the Beatles only toured until 1966 (stopping well before they’d written much of their catalogue) we’re honored to do our part in keeping this music alive, and share it with y’all! As always, THANK YOU!

All the best,
Doctor Robert

Aspen Wedding, Live Music Entertainment

Doctor Robert, The Beatles tribute from Crested Butte, Colorado, traveled to The Limelight to play our first Aspen wedding last Friday. We can’t thank Anne and Cole enough for having us for the live music entertainment for their amazing wedding reception, and for helping pick songs for the night. Over 100 people were part of the celebration, and did they know how to enjoy themselves. Even staff members were enjoying the music, and everyone made their way to the dance floor for the after-dinner dance sets.

We started out playing more acoustic, quieter music during dinner. This gave us a chance to ease into the evening, and play a lot of songs that don’t normally make the set list at other shows. Here are a few from the dinner set:
Here Comes the Sun 10-5-12
I’m Looking Through You 10-5-12
I’m Only Sleeping 10-5-12
Bungalow Bill 10-5-12
Michelle 10-5-12 (Casey on bass, Kevin on guitar)
Mother Nature’s Son 10-5-12 (Ben on keys, Kevin on Guitar)
I Will 10-5-12 (Casey on bass, Kevin on guitar)
Things We Said Today 10-5-12
We Can Work it Out 10-5-12 (Only the third time played by Doctor Robert)

After dinner brought out the best in everyone’s dancing and singing abilities. We loved watching everything unfold, as the dance moves only got better the longer we played. Had it not been for the 10:00 hotel curfew, we probably could have played all night. Here are some songs from the dance sets:
Day Tripper 10-5-12
Drive My Car 10-5-12
Hello Goodbye 10-5-12
Help! 10-5-12
I Feel Fine 10-5-12
I Shoulda Known Better 10-5-12 (Casey on harmonica)
I Want to Hold Your Hand 10-5-12
I’ve Got a Feeling 10-5-12
Lady Madonna 10-5-12 (Karen’s first live performance on piano)
Money (That’s What I Want) 10-5-12
One After 909 10-5-12 (Karen’s first live performance on piano)
Strawberry Fields Forever 10-5-12
Twist and Shout 10-5-12
With a Little Help From My Friends 10-5-12

Thanks again goes out to Anne and Cole for having Doctor Robert as the live music entertainment for their Aspen wedding. We enjoyed their fun group of family and friends as well as The Limelight (an Aspen Ski Company hotel) and their staff.
